Understanding Social Media Algorithms: A Beginners Guide

May 3, 20264 min read

The Goal of Any Algorithm

Many creators feel like algorithms are designed to hold them back. In reality, the algorithm has one primary goal: to keep users on the platform as long as possible. If your content achieves this, the algorithm will reward you.

Retention is King

The single most important metric across TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts is watch time (or retention). If a user watches a 15-second video all the way through, the platform assumes it's highly engaging and pushes it to more people. Hook your audience in the first 3 seconds to maximize retention.

Engagement Quality

Not all engagement is equal. Saves and Shares are currently valued much higher than Likes. A "Save" indicates that the content is highly valuable and worth returning to. A "Share" brings the content to new users directly. Aim to create content that is either highly educational (gets saved) or highly relatable (gets shared).

Consistency Matters

Platforms favor creators who post regularly. Consistency signals to the algorithm that you are a reliable source of content. It's better to post 3 times a week consistently for a year than to post 10 times in one week and then disappear for a month.

By focusing on retention, valuable engagement, and consistency, you can turn the algorithm from your biggest enemy into your greatest asset.
